The List

Series: Combat Development in World War II[g]
Comment: Clearly presented and do not assume to much technical knowledge on the part of the reader. These books cover all nations involved in the conflict and are factually, rather than opinion, based with wartime test results presented in the back. They avoid getting bogged down in retelling combat stories and concentrate on the technical, and tactical, developments.

Series: Rivers of London[g]
Author: Ben Aaronovitch
Comment: Start from the point that the Metropolitan Police Force (Metropolitan London, for our overseas friends) has a department that deals with the supernatural. Add a new recruit. Add a seriously nasty supernatural miscreant. Place those ideas in the hands of an author of wit, wisdom and deep knowledge of London and with a background in writing for Dr Who. The result is this series, featuring Detective work and Adventure, the aforementioned Supernatural (but without wheeling out the Sparkly Vampires), quiet humour and a sideline in exposing the real, modern, London.

Series: Fethering[g]
Author: Simon Brett
Comment: A rather lightweight but competently written series. Good, if like me at the time, you require a book simply to fill the time whilst you are ill. Based on the South Coast town of Tarring and its surrounding area, which I know well from my youth - which is what initially attracted me to the series. Good on 'local colour' and really catches the 'feel' of the area but the stories are not that memorable. Quietly humorous.

Title: Those Ragged Bloody Heroesrecom  - want have  - [g]
From the Kokoda Trail to Gona Beach 1942
Author: Peter Brune
Published: 1992
Comment: A vivid book that relates the desperate battle for the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea in 1942, the units involved and their eventual involvement in the battle of Gona. Casts Australian higher command as the villain of the piece without examining the whys and wherefores behind the decisions made and is particularly critical of Blamey with little attempt at covering the pressures he was under. A good book but very much the 'view from the trenches' with a line to push, look elsewhere for context.

Title: Scent of the Missingstron  - want have  - [g]
Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog
Author: Susannah Charleson
Published: 2010
Comment: Wonderful book covering Susannah's, and eventually Puzzle's, progress into the world of Search and Rescue (SAR). Covers the experience of SAR, and the dedication required to make it happen, well. British readers will find the special problems involved with working in Texas of interest. Now being developed into a TV Series (Filming for the Pilot is complete).
Disclosure: I have known Susannah for many years on the Gunroom EMail list. I might therefore be a bit biased.

Title: Mud, Blood and Poppycockrecom  - want have  - [g]
Britain and the First World War
Author: Gordon Corrigan
Published: 2003
Comment: Really hammers the 'public narrative' of the First World War. Corrigans thesis is that the ideas summed up by the phrase 'Lions led by Donkeys' can no longer stand. Like the attribution of the quote to Ludendorff, they have a very shaky basis. Sometimes he overstates his case, in particular with regard to the impact of casualties, but the book effectively presents the emerging, more balanced and complex, view of the war. A book to turn ideas on their head and make you start thinking rather than absorbing.

Title: Flying Startrecom  - want have  - [g]
A Fighter Pilot's War Years
Author: Hugh Dundas
Published: 2011
Comment: Hugh Dundas was 19 when he was called up as a Pilot Officer in 1939. By the end of the war he was Group Captain Hugh Dundas DSO and Bar DFC having been the youngest Group Captain the RAF had ever had at the age of 24. This is the story of his part in the Battle of Britain and as leader of a Squadron, and then a Wing, during the battle for Italy. Sir Hugh (as he became in later life) is candid about how scared he was and, at one or two points, about the impact of fear on his fellow pilots. Not an amazing book by any means but engrossing and a book that delves a little deeper into what it meant to be a pilot and leader at the time.

Steam-Powered Submarines in World War I
Author: Don Everitt
Published: 1999

Comment: The disastrous British K Class Submarines from inception to retirement. Includes the epic rescue of the survivors of HMS K13 and the 'Battle of May Island', where the Royal Navy destroyed two of its own Submarines and heavily damaged a further two plus a Cruiser, all without the aid of the enemy.

Series: Blue Ant[g]
Author: William Gibson
Comment: Gibson's most recent works are much less Science Fiction and more fiction featuring today’s technology and culture. They form a series in that they are tied together by the Blue Ant marketing firm and a number of common characters.

Series: Bridge Trilogy[g]
Author: William Gibson
Comment: Less Cyber, more Punk than the Sprawl. The future is closer in time and reality than in the Sprawl. The Bridge is the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge, abandoned and turned into a First World Shanty Town, around which much of the action centres. Grimmer in many ways than the Sprawl series there isn't all that much optimism. The books form more of a conventional series than the Sprawl does.

Title: First Manrecom  - want have  - [g]
The Life of Neil A. Armstrong
Author: James R Hansen
Published: 2005
Comment: The authorised biography of the publicity shy First Man on the Moon. It covers his full career, not just the Apollo 11 flight. However the detail of his life post Apollo is understandably rather more sketchy. The book looks into the relations between the crew of Apollo 11 and the various controversies that have arisen over the flight in a calm and even-handed way. This is no hagiography, however you are left with a deep sense of admiration for the man and an understanding of why he was chosen for the flight and was preferred to be the first on the surface.

Series: Aubrey-Maturin Series[g]
Author: Patrick O'Brian
Comment: Simply the best Napoleonic Naval Warfare Novels ever written. Well written and historically accurate in all but minor details. Less books about naval warfare than books about people who just happen to be engaged in naval warfare, some of the time. O'Brian has been described as 'The best historical novelist of the 20th century' and I agree.
The storylines of the later books tend to spread over three, or even four, books so reading your first book 'out of sequence' is probably not the best introduction to them. That said, Post Captain is often recommended as the first volume for people who aren’t already fans of Naval Warfare to begin with.

This book deals with the fate of the ships separated from the voyage early on and features prototypes for Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin in the form of Jack Byron and Toby Barrow. One Avro Vulcan was sent, with the support of 15 Victor Tankers, from Ascension Island to attack the runway at Port Stanley (just under 4000 nm one-way) in what was, until 1991, the longest distance bombing mission ever attempted. Well written and of personal interest to me as I once worked for one of the raid planning team.

Comment: One of those books that rewrites how history is perceived. One statistic, during WWII around 114,000 women worked on the railways, around the total staff numbers in 1989 yet most previous histories skimmed over their contribution. This book puts the record straight.

On Buying me Books

I have been told I am difficult to buy presents for. So here is some advice to help Family and Friends who might be considering buying me a book.

How to Buy

If you are going to be as kind as to buy me a gift please do not buy me any more physical tomes - I don't have the space to store them. Please buy only eBooks.

Please remember that Digital Rights Management is tied to a specific device. Ensure you understand the technology before buying an eBook for anybody. [1]

Please try and avoid using Amazon as I have personal issues regarding their business practices.

What to Buy

Please be very careful if you are selecting books that are not marked as described below, a Gift Token would be far more appreciated than an unwanted book. If in doubt, ask. [2]

Books that I do not own and would appreciate a paper copy of are marked want

Books where I have a paper copy and would appreciate an electronic version are marked want

Technical Capabilities

  • I have the ability to read eBooks in .epub, .pdf and Kindle formats
  • I have the ability to read books that employ Adobe Digital Editions, Google and Kindle Digital Rights Management systems.
[1]Various schemes exist that enable you to give eBooks as gifts. In the absence of other methods a Gift Token for the price of the book, with a note of its details, is the preferred method.
[2]A Gift Token and Note, as described above, would allow me to purchase the book you intend to give, if it is suitable, and substitute another title if it is not.
